Most interior doors cost a few hundred to about $1,200 installed.

Most homeowners pay about $363 to $1,242 to have an interior door installed, with a national average of about $802 per door (Angi, 2026, based on 6,453 projects). Fixr's range is lower, at $374–$697. The biggest swing factors:

  • Pre-hung vs slab: a pre-hung door (sold with its frame) costs about $450–$1,000 installed, and a slab door hung in an existing frame about $300–$500 (Angi).
  • Door type: bifold and pocket doors are priced very differently.
  • Opening work: whether the rough opening needs resizing or repair.

Interior door installation cost by type

Installed cost per door by type.
Door or job Typical installed cost per door Source
Slab door in an existing frame $300–$500 Angi (2026)
Pre-hung door (door + frame) $450–$1,000 Angi (2026)
Bifold closet door $100–$300 Angi (2026)
Pocket door $800–$2,500 Angi (2026)
Most projects overall $363–$1,242 (average $802) Angi (2026)
Most projects overall $374–$697 Fixr (Jan 2025)

Pocket doors cost the most because the wall has to be opened to install the pocket frame, then patched and finished. Bifold closet doors are usually the cheapest.

Pre-hung vs slab: which do you need?

Pre-hung interior door in its frame beside a bare slab door
Pre-hung for new or damaged frames; slab when the frame is sound.
Pre-hung Slab
What you buy Door already hinged in its frame (jambs) Door only
Best for New openings, damaged or out-of-square frames, a different door size A sound, square frame you want to keep
Labor Remove old door, frame and casing; set, shim and level the new unit; reinstall or replace casing Mortise hinges, bore for the knob/latch, trim to fit
Installed cost (Angi 2026) $450–$1,000 $300–$500

Slab doors look cheaper, but if the frame is out of square, fitting one can take longer than setting a pre-hung unit.

Labor cost to install an interior door

  • Hours: Fixr estimates 1–3 hours per door for a standard install, at roughly $44–$83 per hour.
  • Share of total: Angi puts labor at about half of the project cost, around $350 for 2–3 hours of work.
  • Multiple doors: installers often charge less per door when you do several at once. Ask for per-door and whole-job pricing.

Door material: hollow-core vs solid-core

Door slab Typical door price What to know
Hollow-core ~$30–$240 Light and affordable; less sound blocking
Solid-core ~$60–$330 Heavier, quieter and more solid-feeling
Solid wood Higher, varies Premium look; can move with humidity

Door price ranges from HomeGuide (July 2024), so check current prices locally. Pre-hung units cost more than the slab alone.

Extra costs to budget

Item Published cost reference When it applies
Old door removal and disposal $40–$80 Replacement jobs
Resizing the rough opening $250–$400 New size, or framing out of square
Door casing (trim) $2–$4 per linear foot (material) New or damaged casing
Hardware (knob/lever, hinges) Varies by finish and style Often not included with slabs
Painting or staining Varies Many doors come primed only

Removal, resizing and casing figures from HomeGuide (2024).

Standard interior door sizes

Measure the existing door (width, height and thickness) and the rough opening before you order. Common interior widths:

  • Bathroom: about 28–30 in
  • Bedroom: 32–36 in
  • Closet: 24–30 in

Standard interior doors are usually 80 in tall. If you're also changing flooring, account for the new floor height. See our vinyl plank flooring cost calculator.

Worked example: replacing three bedroom doors with pre-hung units

  1. 3 pre-hung doors installed at $450–$1,000 each = $1,350–$3,000
  2. Disposal of old doors: 3 × $40–$80 = $120–$240
  3. Paint (if the doors are primed only): DIY or extra quote. Use the paint calculator for quantities.
  4. Planning range: about $1,470–$3,240, before any opening resizing

How to get a fair quote

  • Door type (pre-hung or slab), core (hollow or solid), size and swing direction (left/right hand)
  • Removal and disposal of the old door
  • Casing: reuse or replace, and who paints it
  • Hardware: who supplies it, and whether boring for the lockset is included
  • Any framing or drywall repair (see drywall corner bead repair)
  • Per-door and whole-job price

Interior door installation cost FAQ

How much does it cost to install an interior door?

Most homeowners pay about $363–$1,242 per door, averaging around $802 (Angi, 2026). Fixr's range is $374–$697. Pre-hung doors run about $450–$1,000 installed, and slab doors about $300–$500.

What is the labor cost to install an interior door?

Roughly half the project. Angi estimates around $350 for 2–3 hours, and Fixr lists $44–$83 per hour for 1–3 hours per door.

Is it cheaper to install a pre-hung or slab door?

A slab is usually cheaper ($300–$500 installed vs $450–$1,000 for pre-hung, per Angi) if the existing frame is square and sound. If the frame is damaged or out of square, a pre-hung door is often the better value.

How much does a pocket door installation cost?

About $800–$2,500 per Angi, because the wall has to be opened for the pocket frame and then patched and finished.

How long does it take to install an interior door?

About 1–3 hours for a standard install (Fixr). Pre-hung units with new casing, or openings that need resizing, take longer.

Can I install an interior door myself?

Many DIYers can install a pre-hung door with a level, shims and a nail gun or finish nails, and hanging a slab is harder to get right. Resizing an opening or installing a pocket door is a bigger carpentry job.
