Read the methodology01 The home improvement cost desk
Know what to buy before the project starts.
Scope the work, see what moves the number, and walk into the quote ready. Renovation Range turns the messy parts of a home project into a clear quantity or cost range.
02 Start with the scope
Price what sits under the surface.
Map the footprint, surface and site conditions. Base work, removal, drainage and edge restraint stay in the same frame as the finish.

03 Trust the number, not the guess
Read the model card.
Every result carries the version, date and boundary of the assumptions behind it. That keeps a useful planning range from looking like a promise.
Cost tools add materials, labor and visible extras, then apply the selected market factor. Quantity tools use the measured dimensions, coverage or density and a practical allowance.
Example: a 12 × 12 ft slab at 4 in is about 5.3 yd³ before waste; with a 10% allowance, plan for about 5.9 yd³.

Why Renovation Range exists03 Read the result
Measure once.
Order smarter.
Use a clear measurement, a visible formula and a practical allowance before you buy materials or compare a contractor quote.
Start with the measurement.
Every useful calculator begins with the part of the project you can measure confidently. The result stays a planning aid, not a promise from a contractor.
Choose a related tool when the project moves from materials to installed cost.
04 Make the estimate legible
No black box.
Just better context.
A useful estimate does not pretend to be a bid. It gives you a sensible range, names the assumptions, and makes the next conversation less lopsided.
Three numbers beat one.
Low, expected, and high show uncertainty honestly — especially when labor and site conditions vary.
Show your work.
Materials, labor, gates, removal, and permits stay separate, so you can see what changed.
Local is a promise.
We only call a number local when the underlying data is local. Otherwise, we label it a baseline.
05 Before you sign anything
Turn a ballpark
into a better question.
Bring the breakdown with you. A good contractor will be able to tell you which line items are realistic for your property and why.
See the checklist01Is removal and haul-away included?+
Ask whether demolition, loading, disposal fees and final cleanup are included or priced separately. A low quote can move quickly when haul-away is missing.
02What does the labor line cover?+
Have the contractor spell out preparation, installation, equipment, cleanup and the crew’s scope. Compare the same work line by line, not just the final total.
03Are permits, gates, and site conditions scoped?+
Confirm permit responsibility, gate count and hardware, access, grading, drainage, excavation and any conditions that were not visible from the initial measurement.
04What could move this range after the site visit?+
Ask what the contractor still needs to verify: exact quantities, soil, utilities, access, material availability, taxes, disposal and code requirements. Those are the honest range movers.
07 Read the fine print
The short version.
Is this a contractor quote?
No. It is a reference estimate built from the assumptions shown on the page. A site visit and written scope are still the final word.
Why does location change the number?
Labor, material availability, permits, and site conditions vary by market. The model shows the factor and the assumptions so you can pressure-test a quote.
