House eave with a clean aluminum gutter and downspout along the roofline
Gutter cost follows eave length, not floor area.

Most professionally installed gutters cost about $12 to $25 per linear foot, or roughly $2,200 to $5,000 for a typical house (HomeGuide, 2025). Aluminum seamless gutters sit at the lower-middle of that range, and copper and zinc at the top. Gutter guards are a separate line: about $15 to $45 per linear foot installed by a pro, or $1 to $5 per foot if you install them yourself (HomeGuide, 2026).

Use the calculator above for a planning range, then use the sections below to check what a quote should include. Published national averages disagree widely (This Old House reports about $9.92 per foot for seamless gutters), so treat any single number, including ours, as a starting point rather than a bid.

How to use the gutter installation cost calculator

  1. Measure the gutter run. Add up the length of every roof edge that will get a gutter, in feet. Measure along the eaves (from the ground with a tape or laser measure, or from a site plan). Don't use the house footprint. As a rough sanity check, HomeGuide notes gutter length is often near one-tenth of the home's square footage, but measuring beats estimating.
  2. Count downspouts. A common layout is one downspout per 30–40 feet of gutter and at least one at each run end. Your installer will set the final count from roof area and drainage.
  3. Pick the material and style. Material drives most of the per-foot price (table below).
  4. Set stories and access. Second- and third-story work, steep roofs and tight sites add labor.
  5. Add guards and removal if they apply. Old-gutter removal and guards are separate allowances, so the estimate shows them instead of hiding them.

Gutter installation cost per foot by material

Vinyl, aluminum and copper gutter profile samples against house siding
Installed cost per linear foot changes most with the gutter material.
Material HomeGuide installed (per LF) This Old House installed (per LF) What to know
Vinyl $8–$12 ~$4 Lowest cost; usually sectional; can get brittle in cold climates
Aluminum $10–$20 ~$6.50 The most common seamless gutter; won't rust
Galvanized steel $10–$35 ~$9 Heavier and stronger; can rust over time
Copper $25–$40 ~$20 Premium look, often half-round; develops patina
Zinc $35–$45 ~$40 Premium, long-lived

Why the sources differ: each guide surveys different projects, regions and scopes (some include downspouts, hangers and removal; some don't). The gap is a reason to get two or three written quotes, not a reason to pick the lowest number.

Seamless vs sectional gutters

Seamless gutters are formed on site from a coil, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. HomeGuide puts the premium at roughly $3–$5 more per foot than sectional. Fewer seams mean fewer leak points. Sectional vinyl or aluminum is the usual DIY route.

What else adds to the gutter quote

Line item Typical published cost When it applies
Downspouts $30–$75 each Ask whether they're included or priced separately
Second story +$1–$3 per LF Ladders/staging and slower work
6-inch gutters (vs 5-inch) +$1–$2 per LF Large or steep roofs, heavy rainfall
Half-round profile +$1–$2 per LF Style choice, often copper
Old gutter removal $50–$200 Replacement jobs
Fascia board repair $5–$12 per LF Rot found once old gutters come off
Permit $50–$200 Only where your jurisdiction requires one

Worked example: 160 feet of aluminum gutters

A single-story house with 160 linear feet of eaves, four downspouts, old gutters to remove, no guards:

  1. Gutter run: 160 LF × $12–$25 = $1,920–$4,000
  2. Downspouts (if priced separately): 4 × $30–$75 = $120–$300
  3. Removal and haul-away: $50–$200
  4. Planning range: about $2,090–$4,500 before any fascia repair or permit

Add guards and the example changes a lot: 160 LF × $15–$45 (pro-installed guards) adds $2,400–$7,200. That's why the calculator keeps guards as a separate line.

Gutter guard installation cost

Guard cost depends on type — screens and inserts cost far less than branded systems.

HomeGuide's 2026 figures put professional gutter guard installation at $15–$45 per linear foot, or about $3,000–$9,000 for 200 feet (national average around $6,000). DIY materials run about $1–$5 per foot. Other publishers report much lower averages for smaller jobs (one guide cites most homes paying about $652–$2,462). Scope, guard type and brand explain most of the spread.

Guard type Material cost per LF Best for Watch out for
Plastic screen $0.50–$1 Large leaves, tight budgets Warping, shorter life
Perforated aluminum $0.50–$2 Durable all-rounder Fine debris can sit on top
Foam insert $1.50–$3.50 Easy DIY Can clog and grow debris
Brush insert $2–$4 Easy DIY Pine needles tangle in bristles
Steel screen $1.50–$5 Sturdier screens Fine debris
Micro-mesh $2–$5 Pine needles, seeds, grit Needs periodic brushing
Reverse-curve (surface tension) $3.50–$10 Heavy leaf fall Usually pro install; visible from the street

Branded, installed systems cost more. HomeGuide lists LeafFilter at about $18–$45 per foot, Gutter Helmet $25–$60, and LeafGuard $20–$70 (LeafGuard replaces the gutter itself). Get the per-foot price, warranty terms and what happens to your existing gutters in writing.

Guards reduce cleaning; they don't eliminate it. Most still need occasional brushing or rinsing. See our guide to cleaning gutters with guards before you decide whether guards pay off for your roof.

Gutter quote checklist

Ask each installer to itemize:

  • Total linear feet, gutter size (5" or 6") and profile (K-style or half-round)
  • Material and thickness/gauge
  • Number and size of downspouts, plus elbows and extensions
  • Hanger type and spacing
  • Removal and disposal of old gutters
  • Fascia repair pricing if rot is found (per foot)
  • Guards: type, per-foot price, and whether they affect the gutter or roof warranty
  • Permit (if required), cleanup and workmanship warranty

How we estimate

The calculator multiplies your gutter run by a per-foot material and labor range, then adds stories, downspouts, guards and removal as separate allowances before regional scaling. Our model is version-dated and shown on the methodology page, and inputs are listed on data sources. It's a planning range: taxes, access, permits and local labor rates change a written bid.

FAQ

How much does gutter installation cost per foot?

Roughly $12–$25 per linear foot installed for most homes, according to HomeGuide, with vinyl and aluminum at the low end and copper and zinc at the high end. This Old House reports a lower average of about $9.92 per foot for seamless gutters.

How much does it cost to replace gutters on a 2,000 sq ft house?

It depends on the gutter run, not the floor area. Using HomeGuide's rule of thumb, a 2,000 sq ft home might have around 200 feet of gutter, or about $2,400–$5,000 at $12–$25 per foot. Measure your eaves for a better number.

How much does gutter guard installation cost?

Professionally installed guards typically cost $15–$45 per linear foot, about $3,000–$9,000 for 200 feet (HomeGuide, 2026). DIY guard materials cost about $1–$5 per foot.

Are seamless gutters worth the extra cost?

Often, yes. They cost about $3–$5 more per foot than sectional gutters, but having fewer seams means fewer leak points. Sectional gutters make more sense for DIY installs or tight budgets.

Do gutter guards need cleaning?

Yes, occasionally. Guards keep most debris out of the trough, but fine debris, pollen and needles can collect on top or in the mesh. Expect periodic brushing or rinsing.

How many downspouts do I need?

A common rule is one downspout per 30–40 feet of gutter, with at least one per run. Large or steep roofs and heavy-rain areas may need more or larger downspouts.
