Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) typically costs $4 to $16 per square foot installed: about $2–$10 for materials and $2–$6 for labor (HomeGuide, 2025). A 12 × 15 ft bedroom (180 sq ft) usually lands around $720–$2,880 installed, before removing old flooring or fixing the subfloor.
The formula:
- Material = floor area × (1 + waste %) × material price per sq ft
- Labor = floor area × labor price per sq ft
- Total = material + labor + prep extras (removal, subfloor, trim, furniture moving)

How to estimate vinyl plank flooring cost
- Measure the floor area. Length × width for each room. Split L-shaped rooms into rectangles and add closets.
- Add waste: most installers order around 5–10% extra for cuts. Use more for diagonal layouts, many small rooms or lots of doorways.
- Convert to boxes: divide the material square feet by the sq ft per box printed on the carton, rounded up.
- Price material and labor using the tables below or your quotes.
- Add prep: old floor removal, subfloor leveling or repair, new transitions and baseboard work.

Removal, subfloor and furniture figures from HomeGuide (June 2025).
Worked example: 12 × 15 ft bedroom with carpet
- Area: 12 × 15 = 180 sq ft
- Material with 10% waste: 180 × 1.10 = 198 sq ft (if boxes hold, say, 20 sq ft each, that's 10 boxes. Check your carton)
- Material at $2–$10/sq ft: 198 × $2–$10 = $396–$1,980
- Labor at $2–$6/sq ft: 180 × $2–$6 = $360–$1,080
- Carpet removal at $0.70–$1.60/sq ft: $126–$288
- Planning range: about $880–$3,350, before any subfloor repair or trim
DIY saves the labor line (steps 4 and 5) but adds tools, time, and the risk of re-doing seams.
How much vinyl plank flooring do I need?
Square feet to order = room area × 1.05 to 1.10, rounded up to whole boxes. Order all boxes from the same production lot so color and texture match, and keep a spare box for repairs. Many manufacturers also say to acclimate planks in the room before installing. Follow the product's instructions.
